Institutional Regulations

Image
In this post I will be discussing the Institutional Regulations that we must adhere to, follow and consider while planning and filming our production. The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is an institution which specialises in classifying films and categorizing them based on the context that is shown throughout the film and the messages that they try to out across. For our film, we are going to aim at an age rating of 12, we aren't able to determine it's classification however until it has been made. This classification however, is the age group below what we are aiming our final product at. This is not a bad thing however because we will have a very niché audience and allowing another age group to watch our film is going to widen this niché. Our target audience is 15  and over, this is because the themes that we are going to explore might be of a more mature nature and therefore not be perceived as we want it to be by a younger audience. The BBFC states

Costumes and Props

Image
Introduction The mise-en-scéne of a film is arguably just as important as camerawork or the narrative. For this reason, we do not intend to lack behind in the planning of the costumes or props. The audience responds in a very active way to mise-en-scéne, deciding whether or not their costumes relate to their character. Characters: Sebastian Forge  (Protagonist) Joshua Carter-Mills  Costumes: Sebastian Forge Ideas for Seb's costume initially came from his artistic background and aspirations. But we feel like someone that is in as much emotional conflict as Seb is in perhaps does not have the time and energy to consciously shop for fashionable items. Clothing like this, while fitting the overall smart casual theme, seems a bit too outgoing and confident for the character of Seb. A costume like this comes really close to what I envisioned. It's simple, almost like a disguise, and the backpack is also integral to the character as well. I think th

Risk Assessment

Image
Below, are some risk assessments that my group members and I have completed, concerning our filming locations. The reason behind doing this is to outline some possible risks that we may encounter during the process and try to put in some kind of precautions in order to reduce the likelihood of anything happening. When it comes to any project, safety must always be a priority. Progress Update 8

Image
We're starting to move more deeply into the planning and production stages now, and I'm currently happy with the rate at which the narrative for our main product has unfolded itself. There are still a few tasks we need to complete, but when they are we'll be well on track on the production side of things. Here are a few drafts of the storyboard, drawn on school whiteboards to express some creativity: Working with a first draft on a whiteboard was a really great move. It allowed me to quickly adjust images where needed, and forced me to move away from obsessing over detail and rather focus on creating a meaningful visual guide (as a storyboard should be). From this, I plan to build a better draft of the storyboard, with some of these aforementioned details included, a shot list, and complete a script that's almost at it's conclusion:

Location Scouting

Image
My group and I took a preliminary trip to Soar Lane in Leicester town centre in order to get a feel for this location to see if it is valid and collate some footage. Here is what we got; Location Video Morgan added the 'Be Yourself' instrumental (covered in more detail within the 'Music/Sound' post) in order to see how the images would fit, and how certain edits would work. I really like the way the sound re-surges at points, and I think it would be great as a credits song from the overall mood of finality and nostalgia that it permeates. Soar Lane Location The urban/industrial quality of it is defiantly ideal. There is a bench by the bridge, just outside of the park and it has got a great setting for the kind of interaction between characters that we wanted to show. Overall, it's got a huge amount of potential. Below is the location of soar lane within Leicester: Above is where we primarily took footage of our location video within Soar Lan

Trial of Techniques

Image
In this post I will showcase some of the techniques that I have developed and some new techniques that I have learnt in the process of creating a preliminary draft for the review page. I haven't included any of the review itself because as of yet, we haven't finished creating our final piece and hence there isn't anything to review. However, in the final piece, the review will be contained within several adjacent columns. Furthermore, there are many aspects that I have left out such as page numbers and other conventions of Empire magazines. The aim of this was not to create the final piece in lots of detail, but to try out different techniques that were listed in the online tutorial post.  The image of Morgan does not feature him in Seb's costume, I simply chose this image because I really like the look and feel of it. I manipulated the image to be of just him and that required the use of many different tools and was perhaps the most time consuming. Although

Online Tutorials

Image
In this post, I will make a list of some different tutorials for the software program, Photoshop. I will list the necessary techniques that I will likely need in my main responsibility; the review page. From this tutorial, I have learnt how to manipulate an image in such a way that I can lift the required aspect of one image from its background and insert it onto an entirely different background. This could be very useful because I will likely take an image from the film itself and put this onto the background of the magazine. This is also very conventional when it comes to film reviews. This tutorial is much more of an optional and aesthetic technique but nevertheless an interesting one. I will certainly try to adapt this into the draft. Aligning text is much more difficult than one might expect and due to the sheer amount of text that will be in this project and the need for their alignment, because of adjacent columns (in order to conform to the conventions of a magazine re

Resources and Equipment

In this post, Jake Foulkes shares his recording equipment with us and some images to show what we can expect. Equipment and resources from Jake Foulkes Although this is very useful, we are still light on our sound recording equipment, as the story is a key aspect of the project, we should look into trying to rent some sound recording equipment.
